Safety

Childhood injuries can have lifetime implications for children and their families. Children and adolescents are at high risk for injuries or death from accidents such as motor vehicle crashes, airway obstructions, pedestrian crossings, fires, and drowning.

Many children also face abuse and neglect at home. Keeping children safe involves everyone—communities, families, and schools.

What is VOICES doing?

  • VOICES’ Alabama Kids Count Data Book measures child safety by reporting the child death rate, children with indication of abuse or neglect, and preventable teen death rate for each Alabama country.
  • VOICES supports strengthening the current Graduate Driver’s License law (GDL) to match federal recommendations.
  • VOICES is working with the Departments of Public Safety and Health and Probate Judges to develop educational materials regarding teen driving for distribution at licensing sites for parents and teens.
  • VOICES is speaking at meetings and civic clubs around the state to a call attention to the teen driving issue.
  • VOICES led efforts to strengthen Alabama’s child passenger safety bill and has worked with pediatricians to educate parents about new laws involving children and seat belts, booster seats and car seats.
  • VOICES serves on the State Child Death Review Team to examine preventable childhood deaths in an effort to prevent future deaths or injuries.
