Creating more accurate and positive understanding of taxes and budgets
VOICES is currently engaged in research on Alabama voter attitudes towards taxes.
A properly functioning tax system is one of the keys that could help break the cycle of poverty in our state. The current tax structure keeps poor families locked in poverty and provides inadequate funding for many important programs that help children succeed.
To learn why many low-income, white voters who would have benefited from Amendment One in 2003 rejected the proposal, VOICES has commissioned a Washington, D.C. strategic communications and research firm, Public Knowledge, LLC, to conduct focus groups with this population.
Public Knowledge has identified underlying attitudes of citizens and will develop messages and frames that counteract negative biases present in the 2003 vote. This work will be crucial to move voters to support progressive tax reform proposals in the future.
